Lifeguard Course Info
The Richard Kane YMCA offers American Red Cross (ARC) Blended Learning Lifeguard training for ages 15 and up.
The American Red Cross Lifeguarding Blended Learning Course provides entry-level participants with the following knowledge and skills:
- Knowledge to prevent, recognize, and respond to aquatic emergencies.
- Skills to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies until EMS personnel take over.
- Skills to provide care for injuries and sudden illnesses until EMS personnel take over.
- Knowledge to administer CPR/AED lifesaving techniques.
The ARC Blended Course includes an online learning portion. This online portion takes approximately 6 hours to complete and must be completed by the first day of in-person training.
*Completion of the Lifeguard course does not guarantee employment with the YMCA.
Lifeguard Course Prerequisites
To participate in the Richard Kane YMCA - ARC lifeguard certification course, you must pass a prerequisite assessment.
Prerequisite skills assessment includes:
- Complete a swim-tread-swim sequence without stopping to rest:
- SWIM: Jump into the water and totally submerge, resurface then swim 150 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both swimming techniques.
- TREAD: Maintain position at the surface of the water for 2 minutes treading water using only legs.
- SWIM: Swim 50 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination of both.
*Swimming on back or side is not permitted. Swim goggles are allowed.*
- Complete a timed event within 1 minute and 40 seconds:
- Starting in the water, swim 20 yards.
- Then, surface dive (feet first or head first) to a depth of 7-10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.
- After retrieving the object, return to the surface and swim 20 yards on your back to the starting point with both hands holding the object. (keeping your face at or near the surface to breath.)
- Lastly, exit the water without using a ladder or steps.
*Swim goggles are NOT allowed. You should not swim the distance UNDER water with the 10-pound object.*

The Richard Kane YMCA offers American Red Cross (ARC) Blended Learning First Aid/CPR/AED training for ages 15 and up.
The American Red Cross CPR Blended Learning Course provides participants with the following knowledge and skills:
- Knowledge to recognize and care for a variety of first aid emergencies involving adults, children, and infants.
The ARC Blended Course includes an online learning portion. This online portion takes approximately 6 hours to complete and must be completed by the first day of in-person training.
This is a 2-year certification

*There will be a $25.00 administration fee on all requested refunds. No refunds issued after the final day of registration for the course.

Participants must be 15 years old by the first day of the course to get a Lifeguard Certification.
While there is no age restriction, participants should be able to comprehend and physically perform the necessary skills to obtain a First Aid/CPR/AED certification
No. You do not have to be a Y-member; however, Y-members do receive a special rate on their registration fees.
No. The Lifeguard and CPR courses we hold are open to the public. We do prioritize YMCA employees if course space is limited.
